Jardin d'hiver

La-Pie-Effet-de-Neige Print, C. Monet

Winter Garden...
Make you winter garden wildlife friendly by planting those things that produce nuts, berries & seeds. Ideas are dogwood, sumac, viburnums & various types of holly. These are good sources of food for many birds, including cedar waxwings. Leaving seed heads on many perennials provide food for goldfinches, sparrows & juncos.

Provide a source of clean water for the bathing birds & for drinking as well. Heated birdbaths are available and prevent freezing.

It's important to leave areas that provide cover for your wildlife. Plant native evergreens for birds & leave some twigs & fallen leaves or create a brush pile for rabbits & other small mammals. Some beneficial insects & butterflies lay eggs in these areas & will hatch the following summer.
